Air Passenger Duty (APD) is charged on passengers departing UK airports, including on private flights, and it is built into the price of your charter. From 1 April 2026, the rates changed significantly for private aviation.
What changed
The changes were announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves in the Autumn Budget on 30 October 2024. According to the HM Revenue & Customs policy paper on GOV.UK, APD rates for the 2026 to 2027 tax year rose to reflect previous high inflation, and the higher rates that apply to larger private jets increased by a further 50 per cent.
The government said the extra increase is intended to bring APD on private jets more in line with commercial flights as a proportion of the cost of travel. As Business Travel News Europe reported at the time, the rise for an economy short-haul passenger was no more than £2, while private jet passengers faced the steepest increase.
Which flights are affected
The higher rate currently applies to larger business aircraft, those over 20 tonnes with fewer than 19 seats. Aviation International News reported that the change lifts the maximum duty to over £1,000 per passenger on the longest routes, and that the government has also consulted on extending the higher rate to more private jets, so further changes are possible. The Air Charter Association has published guidance for the industry on the changes.
What it means for you
- Longer flights are affected most. APD is banded by distance, so long-haul trips on larger jets see the biggest increase per passenger.
